H2HUBB TAKEAWAY

In 8 patients (33 men and 16 women) with MetSyn [ 154 ], they found that H₂ treatment reduced levels of oxidation damage, increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in serum and tissues [ 43 ]. Although the responses to radiotherapy were unchanged by the intake of H₂ -water, overall QOL scores were significantly improved in the H₂ -water group. These findings add human evidence supporting molecular hydrogen's therapeutic potential to influence vascular endothelial function.

What the Findings Mean

H2HUBB reviewed how hydrogen-rich water affected the outcomes measured in 8 patients (33 men and 16 women) with MetSyn [ 154 ]. They found that H₂ treatment reduced levels of oxidation damage, increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in serum and tissues [ 43 ]. Although the responses to radiotherapy were unchanged by the intake of H₂ -water, overall QOL scores were significantly improved in the H₂ -water group.

What the Researchers Studied

The researchers studied 8 patients (33 men and 16 women) with MetSyn [ 154 ]. The study used a human clinical study.

What Effects Did Molecular Hydrogen Have?

Source-reported hydrogen concentration: 4% source-reported H₂ gas concentration; Source-reported hydrogen exposure: 4% source-reported H₂ gas concentration; via nasal cannula; reported treatment duration: 4 weeks. The authors concluded that these results suggest that the inhalation of hydrogen gas in low-weight premature neonates could be an important method for reducing GMH and its consequences [ 263 ]. ROS/RNS species seem to play a central role in ischemia reperfusion injury mechanisms, and the rapid diffusion of molecular hydrogen and its ability to counteract ROS/RNS species, especially hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and peroxynitrites (ONOO − ) [ 5 ], has been proposed to significantly reduce damage during ischemia/reperfusion injury. Although part of the explanation in the improvement of lung grafts with hydrogen application is likely due to its effects in preventing ROS damage [ 102 ] [ 111 ], there is evidence that it also ameliorates the damage produced by pro-inflammatory agents and protecting against lipopolysaccharide induction damage [ 112 ] [ 113 ].

Why These Findings Matter

These findings add human evidence supporting molecular hydrogen's therapeutic potential to influence vascular endothelial function and contribute to the growing body of molecular-hydrogen research.

How Strong Is This Evidence?

This is human clinical evidence from a human clinical study. H2HUBB interprets the findings in the context of the study design, sample, comparator, and measured outcomes rather than using one publication as a verdict on hydrogen therapy.

Technical Study Details

H2HUBB classifies this publication as human clinical study with human clinical evidence. The research population or model was 8 patients (33 men and 16 women) with MetSyn [ 154 ]. The reported sample size was 8. The study used a human clinical study. The hydrogen delivery method was hydrogen-rich water. The source-reported hydrogen concentration was 4% source-reported H₂ gas concentration. The reported treatment duration was 4 weeks.

Limitations and Safety

Safety information: The safety of H₂ in humans has been well documented in gas mixtures. In other deep diving studies H₂ was used during compression at 20 ATM to reduce bradycardia and other nervous and psychosensorimotor symptoms (high pressure nervous syndrome) without any long-term safety issues [ 52 ]. Hydrogen in other forms, such as H₂ -water, has not demonstrated any toxic or safety issues [ 1 ] [ 2 ].
