In 60 male rats with mercury-induced acute kidney injury and no-reflow syndrome, water containing 1.2 ppm molecular hydrogen improved sodium handling, reduced renal-cortex lipid peroxidation and edema, increased fibrinolytic activity, and increased succinate dehydrogenase activity. These results are preclinical and suggest molecular hydrogen's therapeutic potential for renal ischemic and oxidative injury. Further human research is needed to establish clinical effectiveness.

When pregnant rats received hydrogen-saturated water from 2 days before uterine ischemia-reperfusion until delivery, placental oxidative damage, offspring growth retardation, hippocampal oxidative injury, and later memory impairment were reduced.
